Kartel to donate computers to schools in Portmore
Kartel’s new clothing like, the Official VK Line has reached out to all the high schools in Portmore committing to donate at least one computer to each school. That’s at least five computers for the list of Ascot High School, Cumberland High, Bridgeport High School, Waterford High School and Greater Portmore High School. This move is a part of the company’s GEL programme, which stands for Gaza Education and Literacy. The company wants to assist in increasing all forms of literacy in the youth of Portmore and have started with computer literacy.
“Increased computer literacy should also aid in other areas of literacy as it increases access to information,” said Shona-Lee S. Thompson, brand manager for Official VK Line.
Official VK Line, the official clothing line by Vybz Kartel is set to be officially launched very soon. The clothing line will feature male and female tops, shorts, footwear, in addition to other articles of clothing. The line is set to be a lifestyle brand, based on Vybz Kartel’s Gaza Movement. The brand is representative of the ambitious ghetto youth, and is hoping to fill the void in the fashion industry for a brand that ghetto youth can feel is their own and represents them, and no longer be forced to support billionaires they don’t and can’t identify with. The brand proudly states that it’s “from Portmore to the world”.
The company is run by one of Kartel’s business associates and his co-author of the critically acclaimed Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto. The book sits in the Library of Congress (United States), New York and British Library Systems, and Princeton and Yale universities; but oddly was left out of any of the recent Jamaican literary festivals or Reggae Month lectures.
With Kartel’s popularity increasing almost on a daily basis, it is expected that the clothing line will have the same experience, dominating urban clothing on the island and in the diaspora. Though designed internationally; the clothing line was conceived in Portmore.
The company has also indicated to the schools, an interest in working with them in the future, to not only assist students at the schools but to the wider Portmore community.
