Jaheel Hyde wins 400m hurdles gold at CARIFTA Games

Jaheel Hyde lived up to expectations with an easy win in the Boys’ Under-20 400-metre hurdles at the 44th CARIFTA Games at the Kim Collins stadium in Basseterre, St Kitts on Sunday.

The IAAF World Junior Champion took control early and jogged to the line after the final barrier to win in 50.96 seconds, followed home by team mate Marvin Williams, who clocked 51.11 seconds.

Barbados’ Stephen Griffiths took the bronze in 51.77 seconds.

Meanwhile, Jamaican Jauavney James took silver in the Boys’ Under-18 400-metre hurdles in 53.18 seconds.

The event was won by Bajan Rivaldo Leacock in 51.34 seconds with home boy Aljani Bridgewater of St Kitts/Nevis, third in 53.44 seconds.

And despite running a meet record 59.55 seconds, Jamaican Junell Bromfield’s gold medal in the Girls’ Under-18 400-metres hurdles will not be in the official tally as only three athletes competed.

Shanique Walker, also of Jamaica, was second in 1:02.40, and Cheziah Phillips of Trinidad was third in 1:07.98 seconds.

Andrenette Knight led home a Jamaican 1-2 in the Girls’ Under-20 400-metre hurdles final, winning in 1:00.52 seconds with Shannon Kalawan taking silver with 1:01.01. Jonel Lacey of the British Virgin Islands finished third in 1:01.26 seconds.
