Seven Jamaicans advance to CARIFTA 100m Finals

All but one of Jamaica’s representatives in the 100m event at the 44th CARIFTA Games, being held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium in St Kitts, advanced to Saturday’s finals.

Rene Medley, in the Under 20 girls section, was the only runner not to advance as she finished at the back of her semi-final heat in 12.40 seconds. Natalliah White will however fly the Jamaican flag after winning her semi-final in 11.55 seconds, running into a slight head wind of negative 0.1 metres per second.

Shellece Clarke and Shaniel English both qualified for the finals of the Girls Under 18 100m finals, both winning their heats to take automatic qualifying spots. Clarke won the first semi-final in 11.59 seconds (1.3m/s), the same time as English who had a positive 2.7 metres per second wind pushing her. Barbados’ Tristan Evelyn had the fastest time, 11.48 seconds (2.8m/s), in winning the third semi-final. The Bahamas’ Brianne Bethel was second to Evelyn in 11.49 seconds and also advanced.

Xavier Angus and Tyreke Wilson will represent Jamaica in the Under 18 boys section. Angus won his heat in 10.57 seconds (2.7m/s) while Wilson was easy in his heat, running 10.64 second (2.0m/s).

Raheem Chambers and Michael Ohara also won their heats in the Under 20 boys section in 10.44 seconds (2.1m/s) and 10.43 seconds (2.7m/s) respectively.
