Jamaica probing woman’s claim that she was raped by Bahamian Immigration Officer

The Government of Jamaica has launched an investigation into reports that a Jamaican woman was raped by a senior immigration officer in the Bahamas.

Senator A.J. Nicholson, Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister, told RJR News on Sunday that he has been in discussion with Fred Mitchell, Minister of  Foreign Affairs & Immigration for the Bahamas, and will shortly receive a report on the incident.

He said Mr. Mitchell had “stated that he will be doing everything in his power to ensure the proper investigation of what has been alleged, and he will be back in touch with me this week.”

The Jamaican woman, who is a legal resident of the Bahamas and is married to a Bahamian, alleged that the incident took place at the home of  the immigration officer.

She said it took place after a raid by the police a week ago, following which she and several other Jamaican women were released into the custody of  immigration authorities.
