Veteran Reggae Singer George Nooks’ cocaine trial postponed to next March
The trial of singer George Nooks on a cocaine possession charge was rescheduled to March 27, 2018 in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court by Judge Vaughn Smith.
Nooks had his bail extended to the new trial date.
His legal representative in court was advised that the case should be tried in the Drug Treatment Court, which is considered not to be in the best interest of the defence.
However, the court granted permission to the defence for it to review the Duhaney Park Police Station’s narcotics and crime diaries for the period May 4-10, 2017, which is to allow for the tracking of the overall police documentation surrounding the case in which Nooks is significantly disputing police accounts of the events that led to the charge against him.
Police reports were that on May 5, Nooks, 56, was observed acting suspiciously by members of a police narcotics team in the Duhaney Park area sometime after 9:00 p.m. The singer was reportedly accosted and a bag that he was allegedly carrying was searched and approximately two ounces of cocaine was reported found inside it.
The popular, longtime entertainer was subsequently arrested and charged by the police.
