After nine years, entertainer Munga Honorable and his co-accused, Sherdian Gordon, have been freed of murder charges.

The charges were dropped in the Supreme Court on Friday.

Colliecia Wright reports.

Munga, whose given name is Damian Rhodes, has built a decades-long career in the dancehall industry marked by a string of major hits.

But his career stalled in 2017 after he and Sherdian Gordon were charged with the murder of Cleveland Smith.

Reports are that Smith was accosted by a group of men, one armed with a gun, at a party in Ackee Walk, St Andrew. An altercation ensued, and he was shot. He was pronounced dead at hospital.

It took nine years for the case to go to trial. It finally got underway on Monday with the prosecution arguing that Munga and Gordon attacked and shot Smith during a dispute.

But on Friday, the case was thrown out due to the many inconsistencies in the testimony of the sole eyewitness.

Munga was represented by Christopher Townsend and Chadrick Berry. Townsend says the case turned on the poor quality of the identification evidence.

This argument was echoed by attorney Sayeed Bernard. He and King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie represented Sherdian Gordon.

A relieved Munga only had these words.
