Seville and Thompson Deliver Historic 1-2 for Jamaica in the World Championship Tokyo 100m Final (WATCH)
Jamaica has reclaimed its place at the top of global sprinting after delivering a stunning 1-2 finish in the men’s 100 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Saturday.
Oblique Seville, 24, silenced his critics and shocked rivals by storming to his first senior world title with a blistering 9.77 seconds, holding off compatriot Kishane Thompson, who clocked 9.82 to take silver.
American star Noah Lyles, who had confidently declared that Seville was ‘not mentally ready’ for the challenge, was forced to settle for bronze in 9.89.
The race unfolded dramatically. Thompson led for much of the sprint, looking poised to take gold, but Seville produced a powerful late surge in the final metres to snatch victory.

His performance capped a remarkable turnaround, especially after a shaky start in one of the qualifying rounds had sparked doubts about his composure under pressure.
On social media, fans wasted no time in highlighting the irony of Lyles’s earlier comments. One X user wrote: “Lyles saying Seville was panicking for a qualifying race only for the Jamaican to walk away with gold is embarrassing.”

The win also extends Seville’s growing dominance over Lyles this season. This latest win marks the third time Seville has beaten him in 2025, and the fourth overall in their career head-to-heads, compared to Lyles’s two victories.
