25 Dancehallers Who Strongly Supports The PNP Jamaica

With the general election set for September 3, the political energy across the country is strong as people openly show support for their political party of choice. One party that continues to receive strong backing from many Jamaican entertainers is the People’s National Party (PNP).

Over the years, many well known Jamaicans who are not politicians from entertainment, business, sports, and other sectors have shown strong support for the PNP, both in the past and present times.

These are 25 of the most popular Jamaicans from the Dancehall industry who strongly supports the People’s National Party. This list was curated by Yardhype with individuals being elected based on their public show of support for the party via dub plates, interviews or rally performances.

One of the main Dancehall artistes who supports the party is none other than the King of the Dancehall, Vybz Kartel. Speculation about his political leanings first began in 2011 when he recorded a dubplate for then Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and the People’s National Party (PNP), with lyrics encouraging Jamaicans to support the party.

At the time, many questioned whether this was simply a paid endorsement or a sign of deeper political affiliation, especially given Kartel’s usual stance of remaining politically neutral.

Known for his influence in music and culture, Kartel had long condemned being politically aligned, both in interviews and in his lyrics. That’s why many were surprised when, after his release from prison following a 13-year incarceration, he was seen wearing outfits that included orange bandanas, the colour strongly associated with the PNP.

Speculation intensified due to his close connection with his lawyer, Isat Buchanan, who is also an open PNP supporter and another name on this list. However, Kartel’s support was ultimately confirmed when he made a surprise appearance at the PNP’s 86th Annual Conference in September last year. The moment sparked plenty of discussion across social media, as many saw it as a strong and public endorsement of the party.

Another major name on the list is Dancehall legend, Buju Banton. After serving a 7-year prison sentence in the United States, Buju returned to Jamaica with a strong message of upliftment and change. Known for being outspoken and critical of leadership over the years, he had never publicly aligned himself with any political party.

That’s why many fans were surprised when he made an appearance at the PNP’s 85th Annual Conference. It was the first clear sign of his support for the party, and since then, he has continued to show his alignment with their vision.

Dancehall superstar Popcaan is another big name who has publicly shown support for the People’s National Party. His most direct endorsement came at a PNP rally in St Ann in January of this year, where his presence and energy were seen as a strong boost for the party.

However, this wasn’t his first appearance at a PNP event. Back in 2023, Popcaan performed at a conference for St James MP, Nekeisha Burchell. At the time, she clarified that he was simply a friend showing support for her personally, and not necessarily endorsing the party. But with his more recent involvement, it seems as if Popcaan has aligned himself with the People’s National Party.

One of the latest names to be added to the list of Dancehall stars who supports the party is Mavado. Known for keeping his political views private throughout his career, Mavado had never made any clear political affiliations, until recently.

The first sign came when he shared scenes from a People’s National Party rally in St Mary on his Instagram earlier this month which caused some speculation online. While some were still unsure if it was an endorsement, his support seemed to be confirmed shortly after the national leaders’ debate on Thursday, August 28.

Following the debate, Mavado made another Instagram post, tagged PNP President Mark Golding and hinted that he would be returning to Jamaica if the PNP wins the upcoming election. The post quickly went viral and all but confirmed him as a supporter of the party.

In 2023, a photo surfaced of Shaggy wearing a PNP hat, that supports Mark Golding, with a broad smile across his face.
