Heat warning in effect for Antigua and Barbuda

Over the next week, residents of Antigua and Barbuda will experience “dangerously hot conditions” due to a combination of weather events.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services said these conditions will be caused by high temperatures, relatively high humidity and light winds.

These conditions will be present from 8am to 4pm and are forecast to end on October 23.

Maximum day time heat is expected to be around 41 °C or 106 °F.

The Met Service has asked people with heat and chronic related illnesses, young children, people who work or who exercise in the heat, the homeless and low-income earners to be cautious during this time.

Some factors that might increase a person’s risk of developing a heat-related illness include:

  • High levels of humidity

  • Obesity

  • Fever

  • Dehydration

  • Prescription drug use

  • Heart disease

  • Mental illness

  • Poor circulation

  • Sunburn

  • Alcohol use

Some measures that can be taken to stay hydrated are:

  • Wear lightweight, light-coloured loose-fitting clothing

  • Stay cool indoors (air-conditioning)

  • Wear sunscreen

  • Do not leave children and animals in cars

  • Avoid hot and heavy meals as they add heat to your body
