Student charged after fight with cop on school compound (VIDEO)
A student of Kellits High School in northern Clarendon has been charged with assaulting a police officer after engaging the lawman in a heated fight on the school compound that resulted in injury to the cop.
The student is set to appear in the Clarendon Parish Court in May Pen on December 7, and the school board membership is reported to be meeting with his parents on the matter Thursday.
Much of the incident was captured on video, which ended up on social media.
The video shows the male student engaged in the fight with the uniformed police officer at the school, with the two locked in combat, ending up going over the railing to a walkway at the institution.
The two-minute video shows the male student wrestling with the policeman while other pupils stood around, some seemingly in awe, while others clearly cheered on the proceedings.
The stand-off involved the student and the lawman locked in the bullfight to the point where the student pushes the policeman backwards over the railing, where the student lands on top of the cop and begins to throw blows at the lawman.
A security guard at the school and another male student would later intervene and pull the student from the policeman, who appeared to have been badly dazed by the tussle and fall.
The lawman was said to have been at the school to conduct an educational lesson, during which he reportedly had occasion to reprimand the student.
Checks were made by Loop News with an official at the institution early on Thursday, and the response was that the school is aware of the video and has been probing the matter.
“We are aware of the incident and the matter is being probed by the dean of discipline at the school,” said the staff member who asked not to be named, as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
While the school’s administration carries out its checks, the police in the parish have also been looking into the matter.
The video has triggered shock and anger among some social media users who have raised questions about the disregard that some students have reportedly been showing to some persons in authority.
The incident comes just over a month after another video emerged with a male student who was caught on camera threatening a female teacher at a prominent Corporate Area high school.
In relation to that incident, police went to the school to investigate the matter, but were told that the student had left the institution after the video was released.
