Dancehall Star Popcaan Slapped With Lawsuit From Bahamian Promoter
Popcaan is facing some legal troubles for a no-show at a recent concert.
Damien Thomas, the principal of Bahamas based MVP Entertainment, is suing Popcaan to recover his losses from a recent concert at Abaco Islands. The dancehall star was booked to perform three gigs as part of the 2018 Unruly Bahamas Tour. He appeared at the first two shows in Freeport (June 2) and Nassau (June 15) but was a no-show on June 16 in Abaco Islands.
“I’m suing for damages,” Thomas said. “If you’re not doing it (the show), you shouldn’t take the money. He ruined my reputation. I feel disrespected and hurt… I’ve lost a lot of money.”
Thomas revealed that Popcaan attempted to leave Nassau on Sunday without fulfilling his contractual obligations. The promoter said he alerted the police and they removed the entertainer from the flight, and that was when he posted a video from the police station apologizing to his fans for not showing up to perform at the show.
Damien Thomas added that Popcaan also declined to do any promotions for the show despite it being a part of the three contracts drafted for the three dates. He also added that the artist and his entourage gave him a runaround and ultimately he did not show up for the gig.
“On the morning of the final show, when I reached out to him, I was told he was having a pool party,” Thomas said. “Then later in the day I was told he was shopping and had missed the commercial flight… I chartered a 15-seater plane to take him and his entourage to Abaco… He said he didn’t want to go by plane, he wanted a boat. I scheduled two drivers to pick him and his team up and take him to the dock… But he didn’t get on the boat… During all of this, members of his team would come to me and say give me US$1,000 or US$500 and I’ll make the artiste do this and that… That’s extortion!”
Popcaan’s rep, Sharon Williams, confirmed that the deejay did not honor the contract for the last show, but added that the promoter had already agreed to a makeup show.
