Former Cuban President and leader of the Communist Revolution Fidel Castro died on Friday night.

The news came via Cuban state television by his brother and current Prime Minister, Raul Castro.

No details have been released as to the cause of death. His last public appearance was in August of this year.

As the world’s longest serving dictator, he ruled Cuba for almost 50 years before handing over power to his brother Raul.

Castro made history as a revolutionary who overthrew the American-backed Fulgencio Batista-led regime, thwarted America’s attempt to invade Cuba in the Bay of Pigs, steadfastly fought against American imperialism and “gave Cuba back to the people”. As a leftist politician, he was responsible for the development and rise of the socialist state ideology and Communism in Cuba.
