A Malawi man admitted to being paid by village leaders to have sex with women and teenage girls as part of a cultural ‘cleansing ritual’.

In a report by BBC, Eric Aniva admitted to being a paid sex worker, referred to as a ‘hyena’, who has sex with virgins in what they view as a sexual cleansing ritual.

However, Aniva admitted to being HIV positive and also said that condoms are not allowed as this would obstruct the ‘cleansing’ process.

The ritual must be done after significant events; for example, if a man dies, his wife is required by tradition to sleep with Aniva before she can bury him.

If a woman has an abortion, again sexual cleansing is required.

Girls experiencing their first menstruation are also required to undergo the ‘cleansing’ process.

Aniva said, however, that he no longer wants the ritual to be performed, and his wife is also against the ritual.

He also has young daughters who, in years to come, may be required to undergo the process.

Aniva, who is in his 40s, says he has slept with over 100 women, and is not sure how many children he has fathered, or how many people have contracted HIV from him.

Malawi Chief Theresa Kachindamoto has vowed to combat this practice and is trying to get other chiefs to join her in stopping this tradition.

In some other districts, like Mangochi in the east of the country, ceremonies are being adapted to replace sex with a more benign anointing of the girl.
