Jamaican Actor Kevin Mullings Reveals He Was A Prostitute
Although he has a bright personality, life has not always been rosy for Kevin Mullings A.K.A Little Kev , who overcame a challenging childhood to become a promising actor. Mullings, 24, recently took his first shot at writing. Yet Still I Rise, his first novel, iscomplete.
In the unpublished book, Mullings reveals some of his deepest, darkest secrets, which include his involvement in prostitution and battle with HIV. “The book is to motivate individuals who have been trapped into homosexuality, and for those who have been abused mentally, sexually and physically. There are persons who believed that it is the end of the world because they are HIV positive but I want them to know, that it’s not so,” he said.
“This book speaks to parents who don’t think it is important to be there for their child. Both parents are needed, and I want the youth of today to know that being a man doesn’t mean you have to be all macho; it’s about being responsible and being respectful to those around you,” he added.
Born in August Town, St Andrew, Mullings recalls bad times while living in England, where he moved at age seven to be with his father. He attended and studied drama at Eastbury Comprehensive and Warwick All-Boys’ School in London.
What he describes as a domestic dispute saw him returning to Jamaica after five years.
“A male family member sexually molest me. I told my family and they didn’t believe me, so I ran away,” he said.
That incident also marked the end of Mullings’ formal education. Back in August Town, he lived in a house owned by his grandmother
To survive, he said he took to the streets and became a prostitute, pretending to be female for little over a month while living with a male partner.
“Being on the street at an early age, young and giddy-headed, you don’t have much knowledge about diseases. I had no parental guidance and being on the street with other guys who were into prostitution, I didn’t think much about using condoms,” he explained.
Mullings first discovered he was HIV positive just over a year ago. A blood test later confirmed his worst fear.
He believes he contracted the virus from a male client. Not knowing how to handle the situation, he contemplated suicide.
“I felt like all my dreams were shattered. I would sit in my room each night in the dark and cry and just think of ways how to kill myself. I even made an attempt with a knife, but the Almighty spared me,” he explained. Those negative thoughts are behind him; he has learned how to deal with his illness and is currently taking medication to treat the disease.
“My goal now is to save a lot of youth out there that have been molested and going through a similar ordeal as myself,” he said.
Mullings pointed out that he is seeking sponsorship to have his novel published.
