Yohan Blake completes sprint double at Jamaica’s Olympic trials

Six-time Olympic gold medallist Bolt pulled out of the trials on Friday due to injury, but said he still hopes to compete in the Rio Games.

Bolt said he submitted a medical exemption ahead of Friday night’s 100 metre final, asking to miss the final and the rest of the events at Jamaica’s Olympic trials.

The Jamaican selection process allows for medical exemptions in a situation where an injury prevents an athlete from participating at the trials.

The rule states that “athletes who are ranked/listed in the top three in the world for their event who are ill or injured at the time of the National Championships and are granted an exemption from competing at the championships, may still be considered for selection provided that they are able to prove their world ranking form prior to the final submission of the entries for the competition.”

Blake, the silver medallist at the London Olympics in 2012, had to dig deep for the victory after Julian Forte came off the bend with the lead.

After getting ahead of Forte, Blake had to hold off Nickel Ashmeade and a renewed challenge from Forte in the closing stages.

Ashmeade got the better of Forte for second place. Both athlete were credited with identical 20.45 seconds. However, with a medical exemption in for Bolt, Forte is not safe for the final Olympic spot in the event.
