Penn Relays: Bailey anchors Jamaica to gold in 4×100

Oshane Bailey anchored Jamaica to the gold medal in the USA vs the World Men 4×100 on Saturday’s third and final day at the 122nd staging of the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

The Jamaicans won quite easily after the powerful USA Red team of Mike Rogers, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Isiah Young dropped the baton on the final exchange and was disqualified.

The 26-year-old Bailey powered Jamaica home in 38.70 seconds after the baton was passed around safely by Jermaine Hamilton, Julian Forte and Rasheed Dwyer.

USA Blue with Sean McLean, Wallace Spearmon, Calesio Newman, Remontay McClain finished second in 39.02, while St Kitts and Nevis with Jason Rogers, Antoine Adams, Allistar Clarke, Brijesh Lawrance took the b bronze medal with a 39.49 clocking.

Jamaica hold the world record in the 4×100, with a time of 36.84 at the London Olympics on August 11, 2012. Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt combined to set the world record.

Earlier, Jamaica had to settle for the silver medal in the USA vs the World Women 4×100.

The quartet of Gayon Evans, Elaine Thompson, Kerron Stewart and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce clocked 42.90 to finish behind gold medal winner USA Red, whose team had Tianna Bartoletta, Candyce McGrone, Kimberlyn Duncan and Carmelita Jeter.

USA Red clocked 42.61 seconds to win the event.

Trinidad and Tobago with Kelly Ann Baptiste, Michelle Lee Ahye, Reyare Thomas and Khalifa St. Fort finished third for the silver medal in 43.43.

USA hold the world record in the women’s 4×100, with a time of 40.82 at the 2012 London Olympics.
