Members of Jamaica’s record breaking team to the 15th IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, were feted by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller at her official residence, Vale Royal, in Kingston.

The athletes were all presented with mementos at the special dinner on Friday, October 16.

The dinner was the substitute for a previously planned elaborate island-wide celebration by the Government – a plan that was eventually scrapped.

The Jamaican team finished second behind Kenya on the medals table with a total of 12 medals.

Simpson Miller used the occasion to remind of her government’s commitment to sports development.

“It is a spark which can drive on the road to full development, peace, progress and prosperity for all. That is why my government is fully committed to the advancement of sport and that is why we are continuing our programme of sport infrastructure development,” Simpson Miller said.
