Venezuela donates 300 houses to Dominica
Dominica will receive 300 homes from the government of Venezuela after the island suffered massive damage from Tropical Storm Erika.
The island experienced horrific damage from flooding and severe weather which left more than 30 people dead and hundreds of homes destroyed.
Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has donated the homes, known as ‘petrocasas’, to aid those left homeless by flooding.
Speaking to media on Tuesday September 15, 2015, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said the structure for one of the houses has already arrived and President Maduro would visit Dominica on Saturday for a ceremonial handover.
Skerrit said the first 50 houses should arrive within the next couple of weeks and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing will advise cabinet of how and where they should be erected.
Petrocasas are Venezuelan prefab homes used mainly in rural areas under Venezuela’s public housing program.
