Jamaican gangster captured in Ohio

A Jamaican man, said to be a member of a Rema-based gang and who allegedly ran afoul of the law in the United States, has been held in Cincinatti, Ohio.

He has been identified by cops in the city as 40-year-old Andrew Backit.

Backit was wanted on charges of drug trafficking and attempted murder. He was collared on Friday by US Marshals.

The Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team nabbed Backit, who was wanted on a 2010 outstanding federal indictment for conspiracy to distribute drugs and possession of a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking charge.

Backit is currently on the US Postal Inspection Service’s Most Wanted list and is also wanted for attempted murder in New York City.

According to US authorities, Backit is a member of  the “Fatherless Crew” based in Wilton Gardens, popularly known as ‘Rema’.

The gang established a network in Queens, New York after leaders of  the criminal network relocated to Jamaica.

Several members of the gang were arrested and sent to prison, but Backit remained on the lam.

He is currently in federal custody in Cincinnati and will be transferred to the Eastern District of  New York after appearing in court.
