Canadian group donates life-saving machine to KPH

The Canadian Jamaican Medical Assistance Society donated a Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator (CUSA) to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).

The CUSA is a device that surgeons can use to remove tumours by breaking them into fragments, which can then be suctioned out.

Senior Medical Officer, Dr Natalie Whylie accepted the $11.3 million-donation on behalf of the hospital.

Whylie said that the machine will improve the care for neuro-surgical patients at KPH suffering from brain tumours.

The CUSA will ensure that tumours are removed more safely, as well as shorten the length of the surgery and reduce the risk of complications such as bleeding according to Whylie.
