Vybz Kartel And Fellow Inmates Goes on Hunger Strike Due to Abuse From Officers

The inmates of the St. Catherine Adult correctional facility, are currently protesting with a hunger strike, as many of them have reported cases of abuse by the police officers as well as unnecessary searching by the lawmen.

The St. Catherine prison is the current location where Vybz Kartel, is being held, and it is being said that the cell block that he is on is one of those that have decided to strike.

According to reports, the abuse of inmates is not something uncommon either as there have been previous cries on the matter before.

Already, Human rights group Stand up for Jamaica has sent a representative to the prison to get an insight about what is going on and the results of the investigations have led to some very interesting complaints according to the organization’s director, Carl Gullotta.

The report from Stand up for Jamaica is that many of the prisoners are beaten with batons regularly, and even have had their property such as radios and television destroyed by the officers during searches.

On December 25 it was even reported that after an inmate refused to be searched, the police who gave the request pulled a gun on him.

The following day, the inmates complained that many of them were awakened by the officers poking them with sticks.

Minister without portfolio, Matthew Samuda is however disputing the claims from the prisoners as a lie and, says he will be sending in people to personally investigate the matter.

Many people are wondering if the mass searching and outrageous behaviours from the police officers are stemming from incarcerated Dancehall Artist Shawn Storm’s Instagram account going live recently with MonCherie, as it was done hours leading up to Christmas.
