Beauty Queen Yendi Phillipps gets baptised

Beauty queen and model Yendi Phillipps has joined the ranks of persons in popular culture who have become baptised Christians.

A video of the charismatic beauty taking the plunge appeared on social media on Saturday, with her standing in a pool between two males, who later baptised her to the sounds of cheers.

Prior to the baptism, a tearful-looking Phillipps is heard giving thanks to God.

“I’m so grateful… up to this morning, I was on my knees and I’m just questioning … I don’t even understand what I did to deserve for God to be so good to me. I’m just so grateful and I’m just humbled by his goodness,” said Phillips.

Phillipps, who is off the island, declined the Jamaica Observer’s invitation for an interview.

“I truly don’t wish to do an interview… I appreciate your understanding and support,” she said.

Phillipps’ baptism comes fast on the heels of that of singer Alaine, who also was baptised by deejay-cum-pastor Ryan Mark just over a week ago, as well as Wayne Marshall’s conversion to Christianity.

Interestingly, Phillipps is one of three Jamaican women to hold both the Miss Jamaica World and Miss Jamaica Universe titles. Sandra Foster, who won both beauty pageants, also became a born-again Christian. Phillipps was Jamaica’s representative at Miss World in 2007 and finished in the Top 16. Three years, later she participated in the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas where she placed second to Miss Mexico Ximena Navarrete. This is the highest placing ever by a Jamaican at Miss Universe.
