St Jago, Edwin Allen win Digicel Central Athletics Championships

St Jago High boys outclassed their opponents, while Edwin Allen girls had somewhat of a fight to prevail at the two-day Digicel Central Athletics Championships, which ended at GC Foster College on Wednesday.

Scoring 423 points, St Jago were well ahead of their closest rivals Edwin Allen in the boys’ contest, with the latter tallying 111 points as Holmwood finished third with 110. The other teams in the top five were Manchester with 80 points and St Catherine High with 66.

On the girls’ side, Edwin Allen, with 406.5 points, won ahead of Hydel (339.5) and Holmwood (339). St Jago was fourth with 277.5 and Vere fifth with 158.

St Jago’s coach Rahnsonn Edwards said, “it is a work in progress. We are elated about the performance. We motivate the youngsters. We ensured that they are coached within the principles of coaching and we have qualified coaches within the coaching staff.

“The money that will be garnered at the end of the championships will definitely go a far way in helping our track programme. It will be beneficial at the end of the day,” Edwards said.

Edwin Allen’s coach Michael Dyke said, “as expected we came here to defend our Central Champs title and we did it quite convincingly without putting our athletes under any pressure.

“We have achieved most of our objectives. I think we may have fallen behind with a few athletes making it to the Grand Prix finals, based on our calculations but it is one of those things and I believe that at the end of the day the athletes would be the ones who prevail, because we came out of this Championships without any injury, which is key at this point in time,” Dyke said.
