Cornwall College win first daCosta Cup title in 15 years

Cornwall College defeated St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) 2-1 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday to lift the daCosta Cup for the 12th time.

A goal in the 39th minute by super forward Jourdaine Fletcher and another in added time by Shavon McDonald, carried the Montego Bay-based Cornwall College to victory in the final and denied STETHS a second successive title and fifth overall.

Demar James pulled back a goal for STETHS four minutes into added time.

The victory ended a 15 year wait for Cornwall College and handed the school a 120th birthday present.

As with most finals, the first half was a cagey affair as the players looked to be fazed by the huge crowd that turned up at the venue. They turned over the ball constantly with wayward passing, which gave them very few looks at goal.

The second half was a bit more open with Cornwall having a slight advantage, while reducing STETHS to make a number of good defensive blocks to prevent them from scoring.

With the game seemed to be heading to extra-time, Cornwall outstanding two-man combination unlocked the stubborn STETHS defence. A ball was played down the right flank of the area to Vassell.

He dismissed his marker and fell, but got up back to find Fletcher just on the left of the six-yard box. The forward, unmarked, allowed the ball to drop then picked his spot and fired past goalkeeper Kenroy Wallace.

Vassell virtually wrapped up the match for Cornwall College in added time, when he created the second goal by passing outside of the area to McDonald, after a dribble had carried him inside the box.

McDonald’s powerful drive from about 20 metres, curled viciously around the outstretched hands of Wallace.

In the final attack of the match, STETHS got a goal back, when James fired a powerful free kick over the wall and out of the reach of the Cornwall College custodian, but it came a little too late, as the match was blown off at the kick off, to give Cornwall College victory.
